In our latest feature, we step into the liminal space between myth and modernity — where softness is weaponized, and protection doesn’t always look like peace. Umay [from Old Turkic: womb, mark of a child] is more than a maternal figure — she is memory, myth, and metaphor. She carries the burden of care in one hand,
and a weapon in the other. But is it hers by choice, or has it been forced upon her? Does she guard the future, or stand as a relic
of a past that never let her rest?

For this particular shoot, photographer Zarina Sembinova and creative director Nurtas Sissekenov took inspiration from
the Pagan religion and mythology of the Kazak people. The initial idea of paganism comes from pre-Christian religions, Greek mythology can be classified as a form of paganism. It was a term used to describe more “alternative religions”.

Étage Studio curated an art and design exhibition “Sense of Rhythm” organized in partnership with Alfa-Bank at Kasteyev State Museum of Arts in Almaty, Kazakhstan in October 2021.
This exhibition was a result of collaboration between local and international artists and designers who explored the multisensory
aspects of rhythm in different forms and media. Exhibited works were created through different experiments in architecture, music, arts, video & photography.
